What "ready for kindergarten" really means

Ask a kindergarten teacher what they wish incoming children could do, and the answer is rarely "read." It is far more often: open their own lunchbox, ask for help with words, and sit through one story.

School readiness is not an academic bar to clear. It is a bundle of small independences that free a child to learn in a group of twenty. This checklist reflects what classroom teachers actually observe in the first weeks of school — and every item includes the simplest home practice we know.

The 12 skills, in four groups

Group 1 — Independence & self-help

1. Manages their own belongings. Opens lunch containers, puts on shoes, packs their small bag. Build it: let your child pack their own bag from a 4-picture checklist every day for a month.

2. Uses the toilet independently, including managing clothing and washing hands. Build it: practise the full sequence — including tricky buttons — during calm weekends, never in a rush.

3. Follows a 2–3 step instruction. "Put your cup in the sink, then bring your shoes." Build it: play instruction games — "touch your nose, spin around, sit down" — and let your child give YOU the instructions too.

Group 2 — Social & emotional

4. Separates from parents without prolonged distress. Build it: short, cheerful goodbyes at drop-offs with a consistent ritual: hug, high-five, "see you after lunch."

5. Takes turns and shares (imperfectly is fine). Build it: simple board games and any game with a sand timer. Losing gracefully is a skill practised, not lectured.

6. Names feelings with words instead of only actions. "I'm angry" instead of hitting. Build it: narrate feelings out loud all day — yours and theirs. "You look frustrated because the tower fell."

7. Sits and attends for 10–15 minutes at a group activity such as a story. Build it: daily read-aloud time, growing by one page a week. Audio stories (like our narrated Story Theatre) stretch attention gently.

Group 3 — Language & communication

8. Speaks in full sentences and can be understood by strangers. Build it: the golden rule is conversation, not correction. Add one word to whatever they say: "Big dog!" → "Yes, a big brown dog!"

9. Asks for help with words. This one skill prevents most first-week tears. Build it: rehearse the actual phrase: "Can you help me, please?" Role-play it with toys.

Group 4 — Early academics (yes, last on purpose)

10. Recognises their own name in print and attempts to write it. Build it: label their door, cup, and artwork. Name-writing on cards, in sand, with chalk — variety beats repetition.

11. Counts objects to 10 with one-to-one correspondence — touching each object once while counting. Build it: count real things: stairs, grapes, buttons. Touching while counting is the skill; reciting to 100 is not.

12. Knows some letters and their sounds — "some" meaning 8–10, usually starting with the letters of their name. Build it: letter sounds beat letter names ("mmm" not "em"). Five minutes of playful phonics daily is plenty.

Share this checklist with parents at spring orientation — framed as "things to play with," never as an entrance exam. Anxious families drill; relaxed families play; play wins.

Parent tip

If your child struggles with several items close to the start date, talk to the school early. Teachers plan supports happily when they know in advance — and remember that readiness continues developing all through the kindergarten year itself.
