Why this guide exists

In my work with school partnerships I visit many schools with "Montessori" on the door. Some would make Dr. Montessori proud. Others are conventional preschools with wooden toys and premium pricing. Because the name is not trademarked, the burden of telling the difference falls entirely on parents.

The good news: authenticity leaves fingerprints. Fifteen questions — most answerable in a single morning visit — will show you exactly what you are looking at.

The three pillars (questions 1–5)

1. "What Montessori training do the lead teachers hold?" Look for AMI (Association Montessori Internationale), AMS (American Montessori Society), or an equivalent 1,200+ hour diploma for the age group they teach. A weekend certificate is not teacher training.

2. "How long is the uninterrupted work cycle?" Authentic answer: about three hours, most mornings, protected from pull-outs and schedule fragmentation. The long cycle is where concentration develops; schools that chop the morning into 30-minute activity slots have removed Montessori's engine.

3. "How are the age groups arranged?" Montessori classrooms mix three-year spans: 0–3, 3–6, 6–9, 9–12. Mixed ages let younger children learn from older ones and older children consolidate by teaching. Single-year "Montessori" classrooms are a major compromise.

4. "May we observe a class in session?" Confident schools say yes (often from an observation chair or window). A school that refuses observation of its ordinary mornings is telling you something.

5. "What is the child-to-trained-adult ratio, and who else is in the room?" Ratios vary by region and age, but the key detail is whether the trained guide is the one giving lessons, supported by assistants — or whether the trained name on the brochure floats between five rooms.

Watching the classroom (questions 6–10)

During your observation, these questions answer themselves:

6. Are children choosing their own work? You should see children take materials from open shelves, work with them, and return them — without waiting for whole-class instructions.

7. Is the teacher mostly observing and giving small-group or one-to-one lessons? A Montessori guide teaching the whole class from the front all morning is a conventional teacher in a Montessori-furnished room.

8. Do children move freely and purposefully? Freedom of movement — working at tables or floor mats, fetching water, choosing where to sit — is core method, not chaos.

9. Are the materials real and complete? Look for the classic sequence (practical life, sensorial, language, mathematics, culture) in good repair, actually being used — not displayed on high shelves as decoration.

10. What is the noise like? Authentic rooms hum — quiet conversation, materials clicking, occasional laughter. Silence enforced by adults and loud chaos are both warning signs.

Policies that reveal philosophy (questions 11–15)

11. "How do you handle discipline?" Listen for: natural consequences, redirection to purposeful work, grace-and-courtesy lessons. Red flags: reward charts, clip systems, public behavior boards — external rewards contradict the method's core.

12. "How do you report progress without grades?" Good answers involve detailed observation records, portfolios, and parent conferences describing mastery — not letter grades or class ranks for young children.

13. "What does homework look like?" For under-sixes, the authentic answer is "life at home": practical life, reading together, conversation. Worksheet packets for four-year-olds signal marketing pressure, not method.

14. "How do you handle a child who is ahead — or struggling?" The honest Montessori answer is that the classroom is built for this: each child works at their own point in each subject's sequence. Schools that answer with "extra tutoring" may be running one-pace classrooms underneath.

15. "How long do children typically stay?" High mid-year turnover, or most families leaving after one year, tells its own story. Ask to speak with two or three current parents — enthusiastic schools arrange it readily.

Parent tip

Tour during the morning work cycle, not after lunch. And trust the ten-minute test: in an authentic room you will feel an unmistakable calm busyness — children absorbed, adults nearly invisible.

A note on hybrid and modern tools

Authentic Montessori and thoughtfully-used technology are not enemies. Many excellent schools now pair the classic materials with digital extensions at home — narrated stories, level-matched practice, progress visibility for parents. The question is never "screens or Montessori?" but whether every tool, wooden or digital, serves independence, concentration, and joy in learning.
